Bio
Kate Bird is a fiber artist and geospatial analyst based in Safety Harbor, Florida. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in urban and environmental planning from the University of Virginia. Kate’s interest in fiber art started as a child learning knitting from her mother. She found and joined the Tampa Bay Surface Design Guild in 2022, thanks to a visit to Florida CraftArt, and subsequently joined a second arts guild, Studio Art Quilts Associates (SAQA). These diverse, collaborative and encouraging groups of artists, teachers and mentors have inspired and nurtured her interest in developing her artistic practice and exploring media and techniques.
Artist Statement
As a fiber artist working with hand-dyed textiles, yarns, and mixed media, I create three-dimensional pieces to surprise and delight the viewer. Aspects of my urban planning and mapping background influence my work as my analytical approach weaves with layering elements to create new perspectives. My recent work expands my fiber art practice in an exploration of book arts. I am excited about the possibilities of incorporating these forms.
